Quicksand Bookends

$129.00

BY WILDBOD

The “Quicksand Bookend” series developed from a desire to make something practical and useful, with the thought of preservation and the possibility of pausing time by re-“planting” the precious stones back into the earth.

Each bookend is unique: a balancing act of smooth and rough material achieved by using poured concrete — turning the formless, into form — then placing the stones by hand into the wet concrete as it sets, as a means of replacing the organic back into a synthetic replication of the earth they came from. They are sourced from Kim’s personal collection via the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, which Kim habitually attended for several years in the mid 2000s.

About Wildbod

WILDBOD (short for Wilderness Bodies) was formed out of the interdisciplinary art practice of Kim Mullis, a New York City-based artist who is interested in using common materials in unusual ways.

A graduate of The Cooper Union’s School of Art, Kim grew up in Central Florida, where a childhood obsession with fossils, shark’s teeth, shells, and geodes led to a fascination with the relationship between unearthed natural treasures and manmade detritus. In their work, they seek to recover the discarded, the lost or thrown away — trash — as modern artifacts, and explore its juxtaposition to the organic. With a strong focus on notions of time and process, Kim makes objects as a means of experimenting with how materials react and respond to one another.
